Chapter 6

The Basement

“The storage room,” I clarified. “I want to see the box the amulet came in.” I focused my attention on Addison. “Is it still in storage?”

Addison shrugged. “It should be. I haven’t moved it.” She retrieved some keys from her pocket and unlocked the door.

“Good. Has anyone else turned up dead with the amulet on them?” I waited for Addison to flip on the light and cautiously followed her down the concrete steps.

“No one has seen the amulet. We thought perhaps you’d taken it with you.” Tessa put a hand on my shoulder.

“Well, you or Warren,” Bethany added.

“Or even Mrs. Abbington. The last time anyone saw it was on Frank’s body,” Matilda stated matter-of-factly.

“That isn’t a good sign.” Worry had formed in my guts the moment I stepped inside Hocus Potions, and now it settled in the pit of my stomach like it was becoming a part of me. Had the witchbanes taken the amulet to Leo? Was he behind the deaths somehow?

“Do you think what’s happening with the Abyss and what happened with Mrs. Abbington and Frank are somehow related?” Bethany was winded, and her words came out breathy.

“I really haven’t the foggiest clue.” And that was the truth. “But it seems like too much of a coincidence not to consider the possibility.”

Addison moved to her left at the bottom of the stairs and disappeared into the dark. A moment later, a light came on. It swung back and forth as a lightbulb dangling from the ceiling danced in synchronicity like a ticking clock. Then Addison unlocked the storage room, pushing the door open.

“Do you always keep the storage closet locked?” I asked. Her parents hadn’t when we were younger. I’d come down here many times to retrieve one thing or another.

“I’ve only been locking it since you disappeared.” She stepped inside, and I went in after her.

There were unbroken down boxes stacked in one corner. The two biggest walls were lined with shelving that held overflow of the items upstairs. Leaning against one of the shelves was a mop and broom. Near them was a bucket, dustpan, and all sorts of cleaning bits and bobs, not to mention a tote full of wands and harmless spell books—the ones sold to non-magical folks.

“Where’s the box?” I asked, picking through the stack.

“It’s here,” Addison said, creating a circle on a small portion of the wall with her finger and then tapping the center of it. The wall shifted, and inside was a box. She lifted it out and handed it to me. “I wanted to keep it safe.”

I took it, carefully sniffing the inside and checking the crinkled paper within. “Did it come in a case?”

“That’s in the safe in my office.”

I nodded, checking the address where it was shipped from. “The National Museum of Denmark,” I said, grateful for a place to start my research. The Vikings were known for their belief in gods like Odin and Loki. The latter was the god of chaos, and the amulet felt like his kind of magic.
